The Adventure of Being a Dad: Part 1
What are you doing with your life? That’s not a trivial question. You’ll probably find yourself asking it more and more as you approach 30, and it doesn’t stop after that.
It’s easy to get caught up in work early on, and while work is a good thing, it never fully satisfies our need for purpose. You can have the perfect career, tons of money, all the accolades, and still have trouble getting out of bed in the morning or come home feeling lost and lonely. Because, as men, we often think we want success, but what we really need is adventure.
It’s born into us. What did you do as a kid, when you were home from school over the summer or hanging out with your friends on the weekend? Did you lounge in the backyard, sipping a SunnyD mocktail, imaging you were retired with a diversified 401k? Or did you play games, explore the woods, pick up fake weapons, imagining you were fighting monsters and saving the day? If you dreamed of being a millionaire, wasn’t it to buy fun things, to travel to amazing places, to fund your grand adventures? You never grow out of that, even when you’re worn down by the reality of paying bills and making rent.
If your work provides that, congratulations. If not, keep trying to find fulfilling work. But wherever you are, let me invite you to another adventure, one available to almost any guy, no special training or skills required, that provides a lifelong goal and purpose, a stable and worthwhile identity, and a neverending challenge that will work your body and soul.
What are you doing with your life? I can give you one good answer. Let talk about the adventure of being a dad.
